Hearing is complex, requiring a series of actions and reactions to work. The process involves many parts of the ear working together to convert sound waves into information the brain understands and interprets as sounds.
- Sound waves enter the ear canal and travel toward our eardrums.
- The sound waves cause the eardrum and bones in the middle ear to vibrate.
- Tiny hair cells inside cochlea (inner ear) convert these vibrations into electric impulses/signals that are picked up by the auditory nerve.
- At birth, each normal ear has about 12,000 sensory cells, called hair cells, which sit on a membrane that vibrates in response to incoming sound. Each frequency of a complex sound maximally vibrates the membrane at one location.Because of this mechanism, we hear different pitches within the sound. A louder sound increases the amplitude of the vibration, so we hear loudness.
- Signals sent to the brain from auditory nerve are then interpreted as sounds.
Once the hair cells in the inner ear are damaged, permanent sensorineural hearing loss occurs. Currently, sensorineural hearing loss cannot be restored in humans.

I wish I found Dr. Borukhov a couple of years earlier. My appointment was very easy to set up. No red tape or waiting for weeks. She seems to be very friendly and easy going. At the same time, she showed a real concern and tried to think about the best way to address my hearing problem. In the recent couple of years I’ve seen several audiologists and wasted time and money to get the same information that Dr. Borukhov gave me within 30 minutes of seeing me for the first time. I especially appreciate that Dr. Borukhov didn’t try to push unnecessary and expensive “solutions” that would not help me anyway. This type of honesty is unfortunately very rare these days. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Borukhov to anyone who needs helps with hearing.

For over two years my wife has been prodding me to admit I needed hearing aids. Finally this past Thursday I did something about it . Referred by my personal physician, I visited Dr B and Dr K in Forest Hills . It could not have been a more positive and easy experience . In one visit my hearing was tested and I was presented with clear and simple hearing aid options that are state of the art! Dr B and Dr K helped me by explaining it all. I chose a model that is comparable affordable and controlled thru my Iphone. A model that is practically invisible and comfortable. Dr B and Dr K explained how my insurance coverage would work . This has been a life changing experience. I went from being isolated from those around me by my hearing loss to being back to my old (hearing) self. I will NEVER go another day without having my handy dandy hearing aids in my ears!!! They are lightweight, comfortable, barely noticeable and most of all – EFFECTIVE. After 6 months of wearing them – they are now a regular part of my life, just like my eyeglasses. Dr. Borukhov and Dr. Kalschmid are fantastic. They are knowledgeable, kind and really get to know their patients! They are always available for questions, adjustments, help with maintaining my hearing aids. One day, one of the aids stopped working (wax buildup) and they fit me in the very same afternoon. I can’t recommend them more highly!
